The three volumes of the gradual written for Santa Maria Nuova in Florence are likely to have been produced at the same time (c. 1410) as the completion of the gradual for Santa Maria degli Angeli. One of them (Cod. H. 74 in the Museo Nazionale del Bargello, Florence)) contains thirty-eight illuminated initials, all but one portraying single figures of prophets or saints. In addition, at least two of the seven missing folios contained large, perhaps full-page, narrative illuminations. The cutting from one of the missing folios, folio 60v, depicts the Pentecost in an initial S, which begins the introit to the Mass for Pentecost. While the great majority of the illuminations still present in or associable with Cod. H 74 are autograph works by Lorenzo Monaco, the hand of an assistant may be seen to intervene among them in a minor capacity. However, in at least one of the larger illuminations, in the Pentecost, the figurated scene in the centre of the initial was also painted by a second hand, presumably over a design by Lorenzo Monaco. This scene was convincingly attributed to Matteo Torelli, a professional miniaturist. The payment to Torelli for the illumination in 1413 is documented.
